A Vintage Future Electronic Sound

Sentient Oceans is the audio/visual project of producer Adam Lampman. Named after the titular planet in Andrei Tarkovsky's classic science fiction film Solaris, Sentient Oceans offers scores for the cinema of the imagination. From pulsating, punching synth rhythms to pastoral ambiences, Sentient Oceans' Debut Album Hide Your Fires invokes something of the flavour of artists like Tangerine Dream, Fripp and Eno, Goblin, early Mike Oldfield, Manuel Göttsching, and John Carpenter. Adam majored in composition in university, playing in various bands and mixing albums for friends, all the while honing and refining his own vintage future electronic sound - nostalgic of the 70's and 80's without ever falling into mere pastiche.

“I’m inspired by filmmakers as much as I am by musicians,” he says. “All of my favourite filmmakers made music fundamental to what they were doing. Music can sear an image into your head. The best music stirs the imagination.”

“The composition process for me is always more akin to collage. In my music and in my videos, I’m looking for a collection of moments that come together and tell a story. It could be an old house, an electrical tower, a graveyard, a piece of graffiti on a wall, a religious icon. You get enough moments together and they start to speak to you about how to arrange them. If you can get that arrangement right, it starts speaking to others.”

“Sentient Oceans is an encounter. The best art is a meeting place that lights up your sense of potential, of possibility. The repetition of the day-to-day can turn you to stone. To get lost in a good piece of art is to feel yourself coming to life again. That’s what I’m chasing for myself and for my listeners.”

Hide Your Fires is the product of many years of experimentation, trial and error, sweat and tears, analog synths and fuzzy guitars. Cast off to the sound of the Sentient Oceans.

Project details

Sentient Oceans is releasing his debut album Hide Your Fires* on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms for March 10. Containing seven vibrant and evocative tracks that range from pulsing sequenced grooves to flowing pastoral ambiences. A long time coming, Hide Your Fires is planting the Sentient Oceans flag online for 2023.

*Album remixed, remastered, and re-released April 1, 2025.
